Favorite Authors:
I have too many to count, but I’ve always enjoyed Laura Ingalls Wilder and Judy Blume. Now, I’m also fan of Barbara Parks. (Junie B. Jones cracks me up.) and Richard Peck. As for adult books, I enjoy Jan Watson, Charles Swindoll, Max Lucado and Haven Kimmel.
As a child, my mother often took my two brothers and me to the library. One reason for this was for our education, but some of it was also to give us something to do that was free! It didn’t matter: I enjoyed our trips anyway and soon developed a love of books and reading.
When I went to college, I studied to be an elementary teacher. In doing so, I had to take a class about nothing but the wonderful world of children’s literature. For the second time in my life, I was hooked! All summer long, I read pile after pile of children’s and young adult literature. Yet, I didn’t seem to mind. It was during this class that I began to formulate the dream of becoming a children’s author.
Eventually, I did graduate and went on to have a classroom of my own. However, I never quite let go of my dream. Occasionally, I would try a few of my stories out on my unsuspecting students. They listened politely to my tales but only because they wanted extra recess. Truthfully, my stories weren’t that good.
However, I saw a need. Kentucky students MUST study Kentucky history, yet there is a woeful lack of materials that are kid-friendly. Having taught for ten years, I knew what kids liked. I contacted McClanahan Publishing with my idea, and well...you get the picture. Now I go around the state teaching children about Kentucky history and the writing process.

First day of kindergarten (I think). That’s me on the far left. My mother made my book bag. I called it a “satchel”.

This is me as a third grader. My mother signed me up to cheer for my older brother’s football team. You can’t see it in the picture, but my shoe’s are aqua colored and did not match my shirt and shorts at all!
This is me with the two most important people in my life, my husband, Brad, and our little girl, Lyndon.
